Five Wells Square

Nestled between Zadar's medieval city walls and the Renaissance Grimani bastion, home to Croatia's oldest park, Five Wells Square offers a unique blend of history and beauty. True to its name, the square features five perfectly aligned ancient wells, a testament to the city's ingenuity and architectural charm.

Five Wells Square

Situated between the medieval city walls with a striking cornice and the Renaissance Grimani bastion, Five Wells Square (Trg pet bunara) stands as one of Zadar’s most iconic landmarks. Enveloped by history and natural beauty, the site is also home to Croatia’s oldest park, named in honor of Queen Jelena Madije.

A Legacy of Ingenuity and Resilience

True to its name, the square features five beautifully aligned wells, each crowned with an ornamental wellhead. Beneath these wells lies a large water cistern, built by the Venetians in the 16th century to help the city withstand prolonged Turkish sieges. Below the ancient city walls, a defensive ditch once fortified the town during the medieval era, highlighting Zadar's strategic importance along the Adriatic coast.

The Tower That Withstood Time

Leaning gracefully against the medieval city walls, the pentagonal Captain’s Tower (Kapetanova kula) is the last remaining tower from an original set of ten that once fortified the city’s margins. Built by the Venetians, it was named after the nearby residence of the city captain. Today, the tower serves as a cultural space, housing exhibition premises and offering visitors a panoramic view over the city from its belvedere — an experience not to be missed.

Croatia's First Public Park

Perched atop the Grimani bastion lies Queen Jelena Madije Park, a verdant sanctuary founded in 1829 by Austrian commander Baron Franz Ludwig von Welden. As a passionate botanist and admirer of Dalmatian flora, von Welden’s decision to establish a garden on a former military structure was as unusual as it was inspired. Today, this lush retreat remains a cherished part of Zadar's urban landscape.

A Place for Gatherings and Romance

While the wells are no longer in use, Five Wells Square has transformed into a vibrant gathering spot for concerts, events, and celebrations. The square’s charm and rich history make it a perfect starting point for a romantic stroll through the city’s scenic streets.

Whether you're captivated by its historical significance, enchanted by its architectural beauty, or simply seeking a serene place to explore, Five Wells Square offers an experience that reflects the heart and soul of Zadar.
